The purpose of this section is to present ﬁre properties in color spaces such as RGB, YUV, HSI and YCbCr used in ﬁre ﬁeld images. Figure 1(a) illustrates an example of prescribed burning images and ﬁgure 1(b) shows ﬁre regions manually cropped by human expert. The isolated ﬁre images are decomposed into three components according to the used color space where histogram is computed for each component. For more robustness, we average the histograms over 10 ﬁre images. In this part all considered images correspond to the ﬁeld scale.
For these tests, a visual camera (30 images/second, 640 × 480 pixels) is used to ﬁlm the ﬂame spread over straw in a combustion table with an eﬀective burning surface of 2 m2 . The second series of experiments is realized in the ﬁre tunnel of CEREN laboratory situated in south of France (Marseille) where Quercus coccifera shrubs are used as combustible. The diﬀerent color images of size 2448 × 3264 pixels are cropped from two ﬁre videos taken by visual cameras at diﬀerent locations. The ﬁeld experiments of ﬁre were realized in Vigan (south of France) in 2007 on vegetation constituted of heterogeneous shrubs.
