Unless you have several computers at home, all with CD-ROM facilities and broadband internet access, and unlimited personal access to the internet and email at work, you may find yourself battling for time on the computer. One of the benefits of devising a personalised study timetable is that you can be clear about your need to access a computer and this will then become part of your normal domestic routine. Any parent with school age children will be aware of the level of screaming that can develop once the computer is taken over by coursework, so make sure that you have resolved this issue before you begin your course.

Too many interruptions will break your concentration, so be clear about needing some space and time to work. There is also a temptation to see this as a ‘soft option’ in your study timetable, and it is in some ways, but beware of the danger of switching off because you have scheduled your viewing or listening for a time when you are too tired to take in the information. Managing the learning process Plan to view each video or listen to each audio cassette at least twice. We miss a surprising amount of information on a first viewing or listening: this is particularly true of videos that are principally designed to entertain, such as filmed plays or entertainment films.

You have to decide whether you are expected to watch the video or listen to the audio cassette unaided, that is, relying solely on the knowledge you have already acquired, or whether they are to be used in conjunction with notes you are expected to read through as you watch or listen. In either case you will want to have the remote control handy to pause the video or audio cassette as you make notes, but it is worth practising with different techniques. Some students find it easy to read through the notes and supporting material and then watch the video or listen to the audio cassette without any further reference to this material whilst they make their own notes.
